I do not agree with teaching Shakespeare in a mandatory grade 12 English class. As Mr. Hurley said ''Shakespeare is the calculus of English'', implying that the people who are better at English enjoy it just like the people who are good at math enjoy Calculus, although calculus is an optional course. I personally am fully supportive of mandatory English class throughout high school, but there should be more options of English available if Shakespeare still wanted to be taught.
Saying that we should not be teaching Shakespeare in a mandatory English class is like saying that we should not teach quadratics in a MANDATORY grade 11 functions class. Shakespeare is a classic and essential part of English literature just like factoring (which you also taught in a mandatory math class) is an essential part of math and both must be taught in their respective areas of academics in order to provide students with a full education in the western world.
ReplyDeleteYou don't take any math in grade 12, why am I forced to struggle through Shakespeare if you don't have to struggle through math?
DeleteI believe that Shakespeare should be a mandatory field of study for those who take high school level English courses due to the fact that, as Mr. Hurley said, Shakespeare is one of the essential parts of the literary world as we know it. Although it might be hard to understand what they are saying, the things that the characters in Shakespeare's plays learn can still be understood by teenagers and young people today.
ReplyDeleteMark, I think your point of view is valid. I wish you would add greater depth to your response to improve upon it! Next time please add a picture or a video, in addition to a hyper link. Look at your peers' work and respond to at least two posts. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteTo a certain extent I see some value in studying Shakespeare as it's themes are still relevant today and may be able to teach us life lessons. However I agree with your point of view as studying Hamlet will not benefit everyone and that there should be an alternative option that is more fitting to modern society.
ReplyDeleteI 100% agree with you Mark. Your a genius!
